Sales tax is calculated for the buyer's state of registration, not the seller's or the vehicle's location. Built-in rates are each state's vehicle purchase tax (sales tax, or a special vehicle excise, titling tax or fee where the state uses one), checked against Tax Foundation's July 1, 2026 rates and state DOR/DMV pages (researched October 2026). Local add-ons are state averages. Exact local rates, fees and exemptions vary, so confirm with your state DMV or the dealer.

Truck guide: what changes the cost of owning a pickup

General guidance This is a checklist of questions to ask, not advice about a specific truck. Costs depend on the truck, where you live and how you use it. Tick items as you check them. Nothing here is saved or sent.

Towing and payload: find the exact truck's rated towing and payload (door-jamb sticker, owner's manual or maker's towing guide). Ratings depend on engine, axle ratio, cab, bed and packages. A hitch, brake controller or tow package can be extra, and regular towing adds wear.
4x4 / 4WD: it usually costs more up front than 2WD and adds parts that need service, like the transfer case and front differential. Decide whether you need it for snow, mud, boat ramps or job sites.
Cab and bed length: a bigger cab with a longer bed makes a longer truck. Measure your garage or parking space. Pick the bed for what you actually haul.
Tires: larger wheels and all-terrain or mud tires often cost more to replace. Check tread depth and tire age on a used truck.
Insurance: get a quote with the VIN before you buy. Trim, use (personal or work) and where you live all change the price. Enter it under Insurance per month.
